Wildland fire is a dynamic physical, ecological, and social force. Wildfire impacts to ecosystems and human communities are rapidly increasing across the western United States and are projected to continue to expand. Understanding and stewarding fire represents a central challenge for humanity but also presents opportunities for meaningful careers in research and management. This certificate is unique in teaching forest and fire ecology, developing skillsets, and giving students hands-on experience in forest, fuels, and fire management so future wildland firefighters, community responders, researchers and natural resource managers understand the fire and are equipped to mitigate undesired impacts while allowing for its beneficial role in ecosystems.
Admission Requirements
Admission Overview
Applications will be holistically reviewed by certificate faculty to ensure appropriate placement and student success based on past achievement and potential. Entry into the certificate program will mirror the Master of Environmental Management admissions process with both fall and spring semester entry possible. A baccalaureate degree in environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field from an accredited college or university, with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or appropriate work experience and background required. Applicants should submit the following materials:
Academic Transcripts
- Submit official or unofficial transcripts from a regionally accredited university. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to expedite application review; however, official undergraduate transcripts are required for full admission.
Professional Resume
- The professional resume should be up-to-date and highlight education and relevant work experience.
Personal Statement
- One-page professional intentions statement outlining student goals and experiences.
