Mine Reclamation

Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Mine Reclamation prepares students to lead and collaborate across the full spectrum of mine-impacted landscapes and regulatory environments. This certificate is designed for professionals and graduate students seeking to work in or alongside mining, environmental consulting, public land agencies, tribal nations, and community organizations to deepen their expertise in integrated mine reclamation, remediation, and post-mining land use.

Program Benefits

Students will engage with real-world mine reclamation projects, site assessments, and multi-stakeholder partnerships through their coursework and applied projects. They will gain practical experience in remediation and reclamation planning, regulatory frameworks, community engagement, and adaptive management across private, public, and tribal lands. The certificate can be completed in one year and is fully stackable with the MEM degree.

Admission Requirements

Admission Overview

The MEM Admission Committee will holistically review applications to ensure appropriate placement and student success based on past achievement and potential. Entry into the certificate program of study will mirror the Master of Environmental Management admissions process, with both fall and spring semester entry possible. A baccalaureate degree in environmental science, natural resource management, or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university, with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or appropriate work experience and background required. The application process is conducted online and requires the following materials: 

Academic Transcripts
  • Submit official or unofficial transcripts from a regionally accredited university. Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to expedite application review; however, official undergraduate transcripts are required for full admission
Professional Resume
  • Should highlight relevant work experience and showcase potential for positions related to the certificate being pursued. 
Statement of Purpose
  • One-page statement of professional intentions, outlining relevant goals and experiences.
